Committee Discusses 175th Anniversary Events & Brainstorms New Ideas

Moscow Town HallAt the first Moscow Celebrates 2016 committee meeting, held on Monday, April 1, 2013, there were 14 individuals in attendance ranging from middle school aged to senior citizens and town historians.  The committee heard the trials and tribulations, as well as the many great successes from Bingham’s 200th anniversary celebration from Juliana Richards, Committee co-chair and second selectperson.  She shared a copy of their event brochure, some notes of their successes, challenges and some special contacts.

After she finished her presentation, the Moscow Committee reviewed the list of events and activities that were held for the 175th and rated them on a scale of 1 – 5 (1 being favorite and 5 least favorite) on whether they wanted to repeat those events.  The events and scores were as follows:

Town Decorating – 1.43, Children’s Field Day – 1.43, Square Dance – 3.14, Bicycle Parade – 1.43, Bicycle Race – 1.57, Fashion Show – 2.29, Road Race – 1.64, History Book – 1.86, Historical Pageant – 2.35, Fireworks Display – 1.00, Parade – 1.00, Anniversary Ball – 2.57, Special US Postal Cancellation Stamp – 1.93, Antique Display – 1.79, Open House – Wyman Dam – 1.14, Horse Pulling – 1.71, Church Service – 1.43, Souveniers – 1.21

The favorites were obviously the Fireworks Display and the Parade by far and the least favorites were the Square Dance and the Anniversary Ball.

New ideas that were listed in our brainstorming session included:

Hat Parade – 5, Native American Pow Wow – 6, Fishing Derby – 8, Boat Parade – 10, Sports Competitions – 5, Skeet shoot/turkey shoot – 6, Lumberjack Show/Logging Competition – 8, Happy Birthday Bash on Incorporation Date January 30th – 13, Bob Marley (Comedian) – 10, Rick Charette (Children’s Entertainer) – 7, Magician – 10, Play – 10, Community Chorus – 5, Bingo Night – 8, History in Photos – 5, Horse Show – 8, ATV Ride-in – 6, Chicken BBQ – 8, Ice Cream Social – 8, Doll Parade – 8, Pig Scramble – 10, Carnival/Fair with Rides & Games – 8, Scouting Event/Indians – 3, Sock Hop – 9, Dance (Mother/Son, Father/Daughter) – 5, Fishing Derby – 4, Reenactment pre-1840 – 6, Colorguard from all Military Groups – 5, Truck Pulls – 9, Globe Trotters/Harlem Rockets – 12, Tug of War Contest – 5, Chili Cookoff – 5, Motorcycle Ride-in – 5.

Favorites in this group were the Birthday Bash on the date of incorporation and a Globe Trotters or Harlem Rockets Event.

The Committee decided that since we have only 2 years and 8 months to go, that we should meet on a monthly basis the first Monday of each month to continue the planning process.  The next meeting will be held on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Moscow Town Hall.  All citizens and other interested individuals from the area are welcome to attend.
